Peter the Great’s Carpenters Certificate

I, the undersigned, Gerrit Claeß Pool, Master Carpenter and Shipbuilder of the octroyirten East Indian Company at the Chamber of Amsterdam, certify and attest to the truth that Peter Michaeloff (a member of the Greater Moscow Delegation and one of the members who have lived and worked in carpentry under our supervision at the East Indian Shipyards here in Amsterdam since August 30, 1697 until this day) has proven himself during the time of his noble stay here as a hard-working and competent carpenter, including tasks such as preparatory work, protective placement, shaving, scraping, planing, inlaying, splitting, trimming, finishing, drilling, sawing, burning planks and protective strips, and whatever a good and excellent carpenter needs to do, and has helped build a frigate, (named) Peter and Paul of more than 100 feet length, from the start of the project (at stem and starboard) until she was nearly completed; this is not all, but he was, moreover, fully instructed by myself in ship architecture and the art of nautical drawing, so that His Highness shall understand these subjects from their basis, and it can all be practiced according to our approval. To attest to the truth I have signed this document with my own hand. Hence carried out
in Amsterdam at our usual residence at the East Indian Shipyards.
15 January in our Lord’s Year 1698.
